Cotton in Afghanistan

The importance of cotton cultivation in Afghanistan

Cotton cultivation in Afghanistan is of high importance and is recognized as one of the key products in the agricultural industry of the country. The central and northern regions of Afghanistan, particularly the provinces of Balkh, Konduz, Jowzjan, Sarepol, Helmand, Kandahar, Farah and Herat provide the best conditions for cotton cultivation.

Cotton planting usually begins in early spring, with seeds planted at a depth of 2-3 centimeters. This plant requires warm, sunny weather, making regular irrigation and proper water resource management vital. Farmers need to pay attention to pests and diseases and utilize organic and chemical control methods to protect their crops. After about 5-6 months, it is time for harvest when the capsules turn brown.

The harvested cotton is typically used for producing fibers and textile products. However, challenges such as equipment shortages, climate change, and market fluctuations put pressure on farmers. Therefore, increasing awareness and education regarding optimal cultivation and maintenance techniques can help improve production and product quality.
